ROCKFORD - Betty Jean Sherbondy, age 94, of Rockford, Illinois passed away peacefully Saturday December 31, 2022 quietly in her sleep at home in Rockford with her husband Rev. Robert E. Sherbondy. Born on March 16, 1928 in Simpson, Illinois to Hurley & Edna Olive Evitts (Palmer). Betty married Rev. Robert E. Sherbondy on February 2, 1991, in Elgin, Illinois.
Betty managed a mobile home park in Melbourne Beach, Florida for many years before she moved to Elgin, Illinois to take care of her mother. There she worked as an office clerk at Simpson Electric. After she married Rev. Sherbondy, she worked in several other office positions, but then retired to assist him in his ministries; which included pastoring a couple of churches before he retired in 1996 from the Deer Creek Baptist Church in Illinois. After he retired, Rev. Sherbondy served as the interim pastor of four churches and also a volunteer leader in the Creekwood Baptist Church in Rockford, where Betty helped in his ministry with these people and served as President of the American Baptist Women's Ministries Fellowship group at Creekwood. After Rev. Sherbondy and Betty left this church, Betty helped him to establish a new ministry as the webmaster for his own website on the internet, which now is attracting a world wide audience of viewers.
Betty really enjoyed visits with her sisters, her and Robert often went to St. Charles, Illinois to visit with Delores Soderquist and her husband, Donald and their family. Betty was a great host feeding & entertaining members of our families from time to time and enjoying these moments of special fellowship. Even though she was blind for the last few years of her life, she enjoyed listening to the Wheel of Fortune on TV and a variety of preachers on TBN. Betty had a commonsense approach to the issues of life and strong personal faith in God. It was a blessing to know her as a friend, and a very special blessing to share thirty-one years of living with her.
She is survived by husband, Rev. Robert E. Sherbondy; daughter, Sherry Moore; son, Michael Hjort; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and 18 nieces & nephews. The last surviving member of her initial family, she is predeceased by her parents, Hurley & Edna Olive Evitts (Palmer); sisters, Laura Schultz, Phylis Piazza, Imogene Richardson and Delores Soderquist; and her brother, Sonny Evitts.
Funeral Services held Saturday January 7, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Christenson Funeral Home, 925 3rd Avenue, Rockford, with visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM. Rev.
