Duane Francis Elmers

ROCKFORD – Duane Francis Elmers, age 95, of Rockford passed away peacefully surrounded by family Saturday, August 22, 2026. Born in Gillingham, WI on March 18, 1931 to Frank & Susie Elmer (Fay) the 7th son, youngest of 9 children and grandson of a Wisconsin Supreme Court Judge. As a child Duane bravely overcame a life threatening illness. He joined the US Army serving in basic training in Hawaii and fought combat in Korea, even surviving malaria while overseas. After the service he married the love of his life Nancy J. Mullan at St. James Church in Rockford on July 14, 1962. A proud veteran, he loved walking with his fellow service members at the Rockford Fourth of July Parades and had the honor to join his brothers at Vets Roll in 2017. Duane retired after nearly 45 years as courier for Northern Illinois Library Services. In his spare time he loved traveling the world and ventured to 6 different continents. In his younger days he enjoyed dancing with his beloved wife, Nancy, and tinkering in the garage on old cars with his son, Brian. He was the proudest grandad and true family man, his grand and great grandchildren were his true pride and joy. Beloved husband, granddad, uncle and dear friend; he will remain forever in our hearts.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Nancy J. Elmers (Mullan); grandchildren, Nicole (Scott) Bruns, Christina (Chris) McDivitt and David Elmers; great grandchildren, Rosalean, Adaline, Emelia, Kathlynne, Alayna and Braiden; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. He is predeceased by his sons, Barry & Brian Elmers; siblings, Fay, Ruth, Willard, Roy, Jean, John, James and Paul; his parents; and beloved dog, Max.

Visitation to be held Friday, August 28, 2026 from 5 pm - 8 pm at the Christensen Funeral Home, 925 3rd Ave., Rockford. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 10:00 am at St. James Catholic Church, 428 N 2nd Street, Rockford, with visitation from 8:30 am - 9:30 am at the funeral home going to St. James for Mass at 10:00 am. Graveside Interment with Military Honors held Monday, August 31, 2026 at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, 80 S. Water Ave, Hillsboro, WI. Memorials to the family.
