Ellen Josephine Papolio

ROCKFORD - Ellen Josephine Papolio (Burke), 76, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, September 19, 2021. She was born on October 23, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, to Thomas Aloysius Burke and Hazel Katherine Burke (DeCicco).

Ellen graduated from Providence High School in 1963. She met a handsome sailor named Charles Papolio; they fell in love and were married in 1964. Ellen enjoyed going to Chicago Blackhawks games with her sister and brothers. She was a progressive career woman in the 1960s who appreciated fashion and trying the latest hairstyle. An avid reader and thinker, she relished a good book or a challenging crossword puzzle.

Ellen was a gracious soul who provided support for her family, friends, and anyone in need. She went out of her way to bestow kindness to all. Her greatest love was her family, and she delighted in spending time with them.

Ellen was predeceased by her siblings Thomas Burke, Colleen Burke (Barbieri), and Daniel Burke, survived by Edward (Rosemary) and John Burke.

Beloved mother of Lisa Papolio, Steve (Kristie) Papolio, and Christina Bailey; cherished grandmother of Nicole Papolio, Mariah Baker, Christopher Papolio; adored by great children Enrique, Gabriel, Alejandro, Serenity, Isabella, and Lilliani; fond Aunt to many nieces and nephews.

The family has chosen to have a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, they ask that donations be made in memory of Ellen with The Alzheimer & Dementia Foundation .
