PECATONICA - Ernest William Hayes Jr., age 85, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning January 2, 2021 with loving family at his side after a long courageous battle from stroke complications. Born March 22, 1935 in the family home in Pecatonica, Illinois, son of Ernest William Hayes and Ruth Frances (Engstrom) Hayes. Ernest graduated from Pecatonica High School in 1953 and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during peacetime. He traveled the world, with ports of call including the Philippines, Beirut, Lebanon, Capetown, South Africa and the Inland Great Lakes naval cruise. Ernest was a man of many talents, specializing in anything mechanical. He loved nature and being outdoors, whether it was traveling to many of the national parks, camping, boating, or enjoying local forest preserves. Lifelong member of Pecatonica United Methodist Church, serving in various positions for many years. He was a 53 year member of Pecatonica American Legion Post 197. Ernest and Sandra celebrated 50 years of marriage on May 23, 2020. He loved his wife and family with all his heart and was deeply loved in return.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra (Wells) Hayes; sons, David Hayes and Ryan (Amanda) Hayes; brother, Harold (Bonnie Kay) Hayes; nieces, Jodi Norman, Jeri Ann Hayes, Juli (Brian) Colloton and Jani (Everett) Kitts; nephew, Jim (Peggy) Belles; great niece, Jessica Colloton; and great nephews, John Blake and Thomas Colloton. He is predeceased by his parents; sister, Ruth (Ira) Belles; niece, Nancy Aust; and dear nephew, Jason Hayes.
There are no services planned at this time due to Covid-19. Cremation rites accorded. Christenson Funeral Home is assisting with the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family or charity of your choice.
