ROCKFORD - George Henry Hertzner "Swamp Rat", age 79, of Rockford passed away peacefully Wednesday December 6, 2017 surrounded by his family and loved ones. Born August 8, 1938 in Rockford to George Henry Hertzner II & Emma Lauren. He proudly served in the Air Force, before he married his love, Barbara Schlegel, on August 5, 1960. Together they built a beautiful family that has always stuck together. George took pride in raising his family and enjoyed the time he spent watching them grow and raise his grandchildren. He retired from Yellow Freight System after 30 years due to an accident in 1987. He belonged to Teamsters Local 325, Teamsters Retirees and Local 710 in Chicago.
Most Sunday afternoons you could find George watching NASCAR, of which he was an avid fan. George also had a great appreciation for good music and held an impressive record collection. George tackled many of life's challenges with strength and persistence, something many looked up to and respected him for.
George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Hertzner; five children, Barbara Green, Loren, Mark, George (Dianne), and Kathy Jo Smith; many grandchildren & great grandchildren; and life long friends, Carl & Edie Eklund. George is predeceased by his brother, Michael Hertzner; son in law, Gary Smith; grandson, Josh Spencer; and life long friend, Gordy Prentice.
Celebration of Life Memorial to be held Saturday December 16, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Heartland Community Church, 1280 South Alpine Rd., with visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of services at 11:00 AM. Christenson Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Memorials to the family.
