ROCKFORD – Jack Lee Sowl, age 85, of Rockford passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Thursday, June 15, 2023. Born in Rockford, IL on May 22, 1938 to Warren and Ethel Sowl (McCartney). He was a graduate of Harlem High School. Jack worked many years at Barber Colman Company and retired in May 2004 from Leading Edge Hydraulics. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #102 since 1969. An avid sports fan, Jack coached and umpired boys youth baseball and basketball for over 30 years, as well as decades of being a Rockford Bowler. He truly enjoyed traveling, fishing at Pine Lake in Minnesota and most of all, Jack cherished being a grandpa and great grandpa. He loved cheering on and watching all of his grandchildren compete and participate in their numerous activities. Beloved husband, father, proud grandpa and great grandpa, brother, uncle and dear friend; he will remain forever in our hearts.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Judy Kay Sowl (Applequist); children, Kim (Paul) Anderson of Cherry Valley, IL and Chuck (Chris) Sowl of Wheaton, IL; grandchildren, Chris (Audrey) Anderson of Rockford, IL, Matt (Karly) Anderson of Woodbury, MN and Ethan, Tyler and Erin Sowl all of Wheaton, IL; great granddaughters, Ella and Poppy Anderson; sisters, Jana (late Larry) Miller and Julie (Garry) Bower; brother, Jeff Sowl; special family, Lynn and Karen Hallberg & Family; several nieces & nephews; and awesome caregiver Janice. He is predeceased by his parents; and in-laws, Bill and Edith Applequist.
Celebration of Life Memorial Service to be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 675 N Mulford Rd., Rockford, with visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM. Cremation rites accorded. Christenson Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family, to be shared with Serenity Hospice & Home and St. Mark Lutheran Church.
