John Richard Cummings

DAVIS - John Richard "Dick" Cummings passed away peacefully on February 21, surrounded by family. Born August, 1929 to John Q and Elberta Cummings of Rockford. Dick attended East High School, enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and trained as a Corpsman. Attached to the 5th Marines in Korea, he served on the front lines against the Chinese at the infamous battle at Chosin Reservoir, and was one of the lucky ones to make it out alive. One of the "Chosin Few," he attended many D-2-5 Marine reunions over the years.

He returned home and soon met his sweetheart Beverly Johnson, the girl next door. Married for 62 years, Dick loved and cared for Beverly until her death in 2015.

Dick spent his career as a salesman for Rockford Map Co, his father's company. He later owned a Baskin Robbins ice cream shop, and then retired to Lake Summerset. For fun, he sang with Sveas Soner Chorus and enjoyed his boat, drawing, cards, travelling and spending time with his children Jayne and John and grandson, Jack.

Dick was beloved by family and friends. He will be remembered for his gentle nature, quick wit and generous spirit. In addition to his children, he is survived by many nieces and nephews. Internment at 11:00 AM on Thursday February 28, 2019 at Arlington Memorial Park, 6202 Charles Street, Rockford. Special thanks to Mercy Health at Home for their wonderful care. Donations in Dick's memory may be made to Kids in Flight, P.O. Box 5234, Willowick, OH 44095.
