Rafael Garcia-Moreno, 44, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, July 13, 2026, at Swedish American Hospital, Rockford.
Rafael was born on January 10, 1982, to Jose Manuel Garcia-Nunez and Maria Guadalupe Moreno-Trujillo, in Zacatecas City, in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. He and his loving wife Maria Victoria Meza-Ramirez were together for twenty-four years, and had two wonderful children – Cristofer Garcia-Meza, and Melissa Garcia-Meza. He came to the United States of America at only eighteen years of age, to try to make a better life for himself and his family. He went initially to Seattle, Washington, where he lived for a time with family friends who had previously emigrated to this country from his hometown in Mexico. He ended up settling in Rockford, Illinois, and was employed full-time for twenty-four years at Dos Reales Authentic Mexican Restaurant, where he was the head cook – working very long hours five days a week. For about ten of those twenty-four years, he also worked part-time as a greenskeeper at Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Country Club in Rockford – where he was a highly skilled, respected, and valued member of their groundskeeping crew. He worked there many hours a week as well, and loved being out in the sunshine, fresh air, and rolling green hills. At the restaurant, he was also at least equally as skilled, respected, valued, and loved – by everyone from the busboys who cleared the tables, to the servers, to the managers, and to the customers who had the opportunity to meet him.
Rafael was predeceased by his father, and a brother who died in childhood. He is survived by his mother, his wife, his son and daughter, his granddaughter Eliana Garcia-Del Rio, his daughter-in-law Jaqueline Del Rio, his sisters Araceli, Modesta, Elizabeth, and Carmen, and their spouses, and his brothers Manuel, Francisco Javier, Humberto, Salvador, and Cristian, and their spouses, plus several beloved aunts and uncles on both sides of his family, many cousins, nieces, and nephews, & many wonderful in-laws.
He was a loving, devoted, kind, and generous son, husband, father, and grandfather, and a true friend to everyone who ever knew him. He will be deeply and irreplaceably missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
A visitation and memorial service will be held for him at Christenson Funeral Home, 925 3rd. Avenue, Rockford, Illinois, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
