SAN DIEGO, CA – Randall S. Swenson, 79, passed away on June 4, 2020. He was born in Rockford, Illinois on June 3, 1941 to Hazel and Ray Swenson. With many ties to his hometown of Rockford, IL, he is a 1959 graduate of Rockford West High School where he gained many special, lifelong friends. As all who have known him would attest, Randy was a very caring individual, always placing a high value on faith, family and friends. Blessed with a dynamic personality, he was a natural leader as evidenced by an impressive business career and active life of volunteer service for church and community plus for many individuals he singled out to help in any way he could. He always saw good in people and generously gave of his time and resources to those in need.
He was a member of The Lions Club for more than 40 years, serving in the Palatine, IL, Ft. Lauderdale, FL well as in San Diego chapters. At 40 years old, he was elected Board President of the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce. Other community involvement included his work with the Ft. Lauderdale Sailboat Bend homeowners association. More recently in retirement years, he donated time as a Retired Senior Police Volunteer with the San Diego Sheriff's Department.
With a degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Randall (Randy) began his career as an insurance inspector for commercial insurance companies in Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin. During those first six years of his career, Randy also served in the Army Reserves, rising to the rank of First Lieutenant.
Broadening his insurance background, he then moved back to his home town of Rockford and joined his father Ray's independent insurance agency, The Swenson Agency. He later also served as an agent at the C.J. Lauer Agency , Des Plaines, then became partner and President of Affiliated Insurance Consultants, a 75-person agency in Western Springs, Illinois.
Rather than retire, he chose to follow a call of service to the Lord, next applying his financial expertise as Covenant Trust Manager for the Southeast Conference of Evangelical Covenant Churches. During this time, Randy, who was accompanied whenever possible by his traveling partner JoAnn, put countless miles on his Crown Victoria car driving throughout the East Coast to provide estate planning assistance to individuals at Covenant churches and retirement homes.
Randy is survived by his wife; JoAnn Swenson; son, Andrew; brother, Gary (Judy) Swenson; sister, Julia (Loren) Heinzeroth; grandson, Hayden Swenson; step sons-in-law, Brooks (Jana) Wilson and Graham (Karen) Wilson; niece, Heather (Ron) Meyers; nephews, Kurt (Jana) Swenson, David Heinzeroth, Scott (Adriana) Heinzeroth and their children; plus numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Ray Swenson; and this past year by his son, Eric Swenson; and his first wife Donna Swenson.
A celebration of Randy's life will take place in August at Rockford's Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery, where attendance will be limited due to Covid-19 concerns and restrictions.
