Richard Edmond "Smiley" Sandberg

ROCKFORD – Richard Edmond "Smiley" Sandberg, age 74, of Rockford passed away peacefully Friday January 24, 2020 after a four month battle with cancer. Born in Rockford on February 26, 1945 to Edmond Albert & Amy Mildred Sandberg (Carlson). A proud Vietnam Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1963 – 1966. Richard was a lifelong and dedicated member of the American Legion and Belvidere VFW Post 1461, where he proudly served as a member of the Honor Guard. He retired after 35 years of service from Chrysler Belvidere Assembly Plant. Beloved husband, father, brother and dear friend, he will remain forever in our hearts.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Lee Sandberg (Kohnhorst); son, Edmond Tyson Sandberg; brother, Ramey Joe Sandberg; dear friend & caretaker, Ken Rupnow; as well as many beloved friends. He is predeceased by his parents.

Celebration of Life Memorial held in Spring 2020 – date & time to be announced. Cremation rites accorded. Christenson Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Memorials to the family.
