Shirley Sue Vanbriesen

ROCKFORD - Shirley S. VanBriesen, age 67, of Rockford and formerly of Stillman Valley passed away Thursday June 28, 2018 in her home with family & friends by her side; her beloved cat Smudge, who laid his head on the Bible on her bed as she passed. Born February 1, 1951 in Rochelle to Clarence & Ella VanBriesen. She was raised in Stillman Valley and graduated in 1969 from Stillman Valley High School. Always looking for a new challenge she pursued numerous careers, working as a secretary at W.F. John Barnes, Respiratory Therapist at Swedish American Hospital, barbered at Alpine Village and in Scottsdale, AZ. Her final employment was a bonding officer at the Winnebago County Sheriffs Department.

Her next challenge was becoming disabled and battling Rheumatoid Arthritis, which she struggled with for 35 years. Her final challenge came with a cancer diagnosis six short months ago. Shirley will always be remembered for her sense of humor and ability to endure without complaint. Her humor always seemed to endear her to her many caregivers. She enjoyed her home and was often seen tending to her gardens from her electric scooter – she always found a way.

In her words, she wished to "Thank God" for her cousin, Nancy Rhodes, for her help and friendship through the years; special cousin, Madelyn Adams,who was by her side for her cancer journey; her "Pot Luck Gang" for their friendship; her friends, Richard & Sheila and Sammy & Mary; friend, Lynn Warner, who cared for her in her final days. A "Special Thanks" to the staff at OSF Hospital, Oncology and Hospice for their kindness.

Shirley is survived by sister, Betty McBride; nephew, Cary (Tiffany) Callis & children of Rockford; brother, Roger VanBriesen; nephews, Aaron (Jill) VanBriesen & children and Nathan (Lindsey) VanBriesen & children of Arizona; as well as numerous cousins. She is predeceased by her parents; niece-in-law, Wendy; and her special dog, Rubin.

Per Shirley's request no services will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Cremation rites accorded. Christenson Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, Memorials to the Winnebago County Humane Society.
